The History of The Sam Houston Statue in Huntsville, Texas
If you’ve ever driven on I-45 between Houston and Dallas, you’ve probably seen this giant figure rising out of the trees. This 67-foot-tall statue honors Sam Houston, an important figure in Texas history and yes, the city of Houston is named after him.
Sam Houston led the Texan Army to victory over Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, securing Texas’ independence. He later served as President of the Republic of Texas, Governor of Texas and even a U.S. Senator.
Fun fact: he’s the only American to be elected governor of two different states, Tennessee and Texas.
The statue was built in 1994 by artist David Adickes and is the tallest statue in the U.S.
It’s the perfect quick stop on a Texas road trip if you’re driving between Houston and Dallas.
