Visiting Hobbiton in New Zealand? Here’s what I wish I knew!

If you’re a Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit fan, visiting Hobbiton is an absolute must and honestly even if you’re not a fan, the scenery alone is still worth it.

Here’s what to expect when visiting the movie set:

  1. Hobbit holes everywhere!
  2. Rolling green hills straight out of Middle Earth (with lots of sheep, like a lot)
  3. An actual visit inside one of the Hobbit homes (it wasn’t one of the ones they actually filmed in but it’s still cool to get that experience)
  4. The Green Dragon Inn, your tour ends with a drink here
  5. The tour runs rain or shine (they provide umbrellas if needed)

What to know:

  • It’s about a 2 hour drive from Auckland
  • Tours run daily and last about 2 hours
  • Tickets start around $89 NZD or $71 USD (as of April 2025)
  • Book in advance, it gets packed especially in the summer
  • You can’t visit on your own, it’s guided only. A short bus ride takes you from the check in point to the movie set

Enjoy!
