Visiting Hobbiton in New Zealand? Here’s what I wish I knew!
If you’re a Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit fan, visiting Hobbiton is an absolute must and honestly even if you’re not a fan, the scenery alone is still worth it.
Here’s what to expect when visiting the movie set:
- Hobbit holes everywhere!
- Rolling green hills straight out of Middle Earth (with lots of sheep, like a lot)
- An actual visit inside one of the Hobbit homes (it wasn’t one of the ones they actually filmed in but it’s still cool to get that experience)
- The Green Dragon Inn, your tour ends with a drink here
- The tour runs rain or shine (they provide umbrellas if needed)
What to know:
- It’s about a 2 hour drive from Auckland
- Tours run daily and last about 2 hours
- Tickets start around $89 NZD or $71 USD (as of April 2025)
- Book in advance, it gets packed especially in the summer
- You can’t visit on your own, it’s guided only. A short bus ride takes you from the check in point to the movie set
Enjoy!
