Milford Sound, Fjordland, New Zealand
Milford Sound is the most iconic place in New Zealand and it’s not even a sound. According to our boat captain, it’s technically a fjord, formed by ancient glaciers carving through the rock.
Its Māori name is Piopiotahi, which refers to the piopio, an extinct NZ native bird. In Māori legend, the demigod Māui died while trying to gain immortality for mankind and a single piopio flew here in mourning giving the place its name.
Someone called Milford Sound the “eighth wonder of the world” and after seeing it I get the hype. I hope one day they fix the name to Milford Fjord because fjords are so much cooler in my opinion.
